Chaukhandi Stupa
The Chaukhandi Stupa is a significant Buddhist monument located in Sarnath, near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Originally built as a terraced temple during the 7th and 8th centuries, it marks the place where Buddha and his first disciples met while traveling from Bodhgaya to Sarnath.
The stupa was later modified by Govardhan, the son of Raja Todar Mal, to its present shape, which includes an octagonal tower to commemorate the visit of Mughal ruler Humayun.
The stupa is a high earthen mound covered with a brickwork edifice topped by the octagonal tower. It is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and was declared a monument of national importance in June 2019.
The serene surroundings and lush gardens make it a peaceful spot for visitors to reflect and learn about the early spread of Buddhism in India.
