The Chennai Lighthouse, also known as the Madras Lighthouse, is a prominent landmark located on Marina Beach in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Built by the East Coast Constructions and Industries in 1976, it replaced the old lighthouse situated in the northern direction of Marina Beach. The new lighthouse was inaugurated in January 1977 and is one of the few lighthouses in the world with an elevator.
The lighthouse stands at a height of 45.72 meters (150 feet) and features a 3rd order revolving optic inside a lantern house with a diameter of 2.5 meters. It is powered by a solar panel and has a range of 28 nautical miles (52 kilometers).
The lighthouse also houses an office of the meteorological department.
