The Chittorgarh Fort, also known as Chittod Fort, is one of the largest forts in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the present-day city of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, the fort stands atop a hill that is 180 meters high and sprawls over an area of 280 hectares. It was the capital of Mewar and has a rich history of battles and sieges.
The fort is home to several historic structures, including four palaces, 19 large temples, 20 large water bodies, 4 memorials, and a few victory towers. Some of the notable attractions within the fort are the Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory), built by Maharana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over the Sultan of Malwa, and the Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame), dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara, Adinathji.
The fort has faced several attacks throughout its history, including sieges by Sultan Alauddin Khilji in 1303, Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat in 1535, and Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1568. Despite these challenges, the fort remains a symbol of Rajput bravery and resilience.
