City Birds Wildlife Sanctuary
City Birds Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Sector 21 of Chandigarh, is also known as the Parrot Bird Sanctuary due to its large population of parrots. Established in 1998, this 2.9-hectare sanctuary is unique as it is the first bird sanctuary situated within a populated city in India.
The sanctuary provides a natural habitat for hundreds of parrots along with around 262 other bird species such as peacocks, hoopoes, and hornbills, as well as various butterflies, reptiles, and mammals like leopards and mongoose. While the sanctuary offers green space with beautifully designed benches attracting visitors, the parrot population has declined from about 10,000 a decade ago to around 2,000 in recent years.
Efforts to protect the parrots include regulating lighting that disturbed their sleep patterns, and ongoing measures aim to increase tree plantations to provide better habitat for these birds, making it an important site for urban wildlife conservation and nature enthusiasts.
