Conolly Canal
The Conolly Canal, also known as the Canoly Canal, is a significant part of the West Coast Canal (WCC) network in Kerala. Constructed between 1848 and 1850 under the orders of H.V. Conolly, the then collector of Malabar, the canal was built primarily by human labor.
It connects the Korapuzha River in the north to the Kallai River in the south, creating a vital waterway for transporting goods between Kozhikode and Kochi.
The canal stretches approximately 11.4 kilometers and varies in width from 6 to 20 meters, with a water depth ranging from 0.5 to 2 meters during the monsoon season. The sides of the canal are lined with dimension stone, although some sections have deteriorated over time.
The canal has played a crucial role in the region's trade and transportation, facilitating the movement of goods such as coconut oil and coconut fiber (chakiri) using traditional houseboats known as "kettuvallam".
