Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre
The Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre is a specialized park located near Neyyar Dam, close to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Established in 1977, it serves as a breeding and conservation site primarily for mugger crocodiles, where they are raised and later released into nearby natural water bodies like the Neyyar River and lake to help maintain their population.
The center also temporarily houses other reptiles rescued from local villages for rehabilitation before their release. Originally named the Steve Irwin National Park in honor of the famous naturalist, it was later renamed due to legal reasons.
Visitors to the center can observe crocodiles in a naturalistic setting, and the surrounding Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary offers additional wildlife experiences including boat rides on the dam lake to safely view crocodiles in the wild. The center plays a key role in research, rescue, and the preservation of crocodiles in the region while serving as an educational and tourist destination.
