Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary
Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Dampa Tiger Reserve, is the largest protected wildlife area in Mizoram, covering around 500 square kilometers in the Mamit district. Located in the Lushai Hills, it features lush tropical forests, hills, valleys, streams, and rivulets, providing a rich habitat for diverse flora and fauna. The sanctuary is home to species such as elephants, gaur, tiger, leopard, hoolock gibbon, and rich birdlife including hornbills.
It hosts the highest density of clouded leopards in India and supports several species of primates, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. Despite its designation as a tiger reserve, tiger numbers are low. The sanctuary requires visitors to explore primarily on foot due to difficult terrain, offering an immersive experience in a largely untouched natural environment.
Dampa plays a critical role in biodiversity conservation in northeastern India and is best visited between October and April with prior permission from forest authorities.
