Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary
Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, located in Ballari district of Karnataka, is Asia's first sanctuary dedicated exclusively to the conservation of the Indian sloth bear. Spread across around 82.7 square kilometers, it was established in 1994 and later expanded to protect the rocky terrain, caves, and boulders that provide an ideal habitat for these bears.
The sanctuary is home to around 150 sloth bears and also supports other wildlife like leopards, hyenas, wild boars, pangolins, mongooses, and over 70 bird species. Visitors can observe the bears from a watchtower, especially during the evening when the bears descend from hills. The sanctuary is about 50 km from Ballari and 15 km from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi, serving as a significant wildlife conservation area and tourist destination in the region.
