Savandurga
Savandurga, located about 60 kilometers west of Bengaluru in Karnataka, is Asia's largest monolith hill, rising to 1,226 meters above sea level. It consists of two hills known locally as Karigudda (Black Hill) and Biligudda (White Hill). The area has historical importance as a natural fortress and was once a secondary capital for the Magadi rulers, notably under Kempegowda.
Later, it was controlled by Mysore rulers and was captured by the British in 1791 during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. The hill is also home to significant temples at its base, including the Savandi Veerabhadreshwara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Veerabhadra and the Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, attracting devotees from across Karnataka.
The entire site combines natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage, with challenging trekking routes offering impressive views of the surrounding reservoirs and landscape. Savandurga is sometimes called the "Fort of Death" because of its steep slopes and historical military importance.
