Datia Fort
Datia Fort, also known as Datia Palace or Bir Singh Palace, is a magnificent seven-story stone and brick palace located in Datia, Madhya Pradesh. Built between 1614 and 1623 by Raja Bir Singh Deo, a Bundela Rajput ruler, the palace is an outstanding example of Bundela architecture that blends Mughal and Rajput styles.
It features a square plan with a central domed tower and intricate carvings, balconies, jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies), and chhatris (domed pavilions). The palace, built without wood or iron, stands on a rocky ridge overlooking the town and nearby Karna Sagar lake. Despite its grandeur, the palace was never inhabited by the royal family and remains mostly vacant.
It includes over 400 rooms across its seven floors and has underground chambers designed to provide relief from heat. The fort and palace complex also contain royal memorial chhatris, temples, and other historic structures, making it a key cultural and architectural landmark in the region.
