Deogan Fort, also connected with the larger Palamu Fort complex, is located in Palamu district of Jharkhand near Betla National Park along the Auranga River. It is part of the historic twin forts that date back about 400 years and were built by the tribal Chero kings to defend their kingdom against Mughal invaders.
The fort complex includes the Old Fort on the plains, with high thick walls, three gates, a deep well, temples, and a mosque, and the New Fort perched on a hill with strong ramparts, vaulted chambers, and bastions. These forts were important military and administrative centers, showing intricate architecture made with stone, lime, and surkhi mortar. Due to passage of time and deliberate destruction by the British in the 19th century, the forts are now in ruins but remain significant symbols of Chero heritage and regional history.
Restoration efforts are underway to preserve this architectural treasure and honor the legacy of the Chero dynasty.
