McCluskieganj
McCluskieganj is a small hilly town near Ranchi in Jharkhand, founded in 1933 by Ernest Timothy McCluskie as a homeland for the Anglo-Indian community. McCluskie acquired about 10,000 acres of land from the local Ratu Maharaja to create a cooperative where Anglo-Indians could buy shares and receive plots to settle, leading to the establishment of around 400 families within a decade.
The town, known for its pleasant climate and scenic landscape on the Chotanagpur plateau, developed with British-style bungalows, churches, and schools, earning the nickname “Little England.” However, after World War II many Anglo-Indian families left for other countries, and now only a few remain. Despite its decline, McCluskieganj remains a tourist spot famous for its colonial-era buildings, peaceful environment, and cultural heritage.
