Devaraya Fort, also known as Konda Reddy Fort, is a historic fortress located in the city of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The fort’s construction dates back to the 12th century when Kurnool was an important base for crossing the Tungabhadra River.
It was significantly developed between 1530 and 1542 by the Vijayanagara rulers Devaraya II and Achyutaraya, brother of the famous Krishnadevaraya. The fort has three levels with multiple gateways and bastions, serving as a watchtower during the 17th and 18th centuries. It is named after Konda Reddy, the last ruler of Alampur, who was imprisoned there by the Kurnool Nawab but later escaped using hidden tunnels.
These tunnels are now closed to visitors. The fort combines military architectural features with cultural history and offers scenic views from its upper floors. It remains a popular tourist site and symbolizes the region’s rich Vijayanagara heritage and historical significance.
