The Dhamekh Stupa is a significant Buddhist monument located in Sarnath, near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Originally built in 249 BCE by King Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty, the stupa marks the spot where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment.
This event is known as the Dharma Chakra Pravartana, or the "Turning of the Wheel of Dharma".
The stupa is cylindrical in shape and made of red bricks and Chunar sandstones. It stands at a height of 33.6 meters with a diameter of 28 meters. The lower part of the stupa is adorned with intricately carved stones, showcasing the high level of craftsmanship during the Gupta Dynasty.
The stupa also features eight niches facing different directions, which were possibly meant to house Buddha's images.
