Dhebar Lake / Jaisamand Lake
Dhebar Lake, also known as Jaisamand Lake, is the second largest artificial freshwater lake in India, located about 48 kilometers from Udaipur, Rajasthan. It was created in the 17th century when Maharana Jai Singh built a marble dam across the Gomati River to address water scarcity in the region.
Spanning around 87 square kilometers with a depth of about 31 meters, the lake was once the largest artificial lake in the world before being surpassed by the Aswan Dam. The name Jaisamand means "Ocean of Victory," reflecting Maharana Jai Singh's pride when he inaugurated it in 1691 by distributing gold equal to his own weight.
The lake features three islands, including inhabited ones, and is surrounded by impressive palaces, including the Hawa Mahal Palace, which was a royal residence. Adjacent to the lake is the Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary, home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare animals and migratory birds.
The lake and its surroundings are known for their scenic beauty, historical structures, and opportunities for boating and wildlife viewing, making it a significant heritage and nature spot near Udaipur.
