Dindigul Rock Fort
The Dindigul Rock Fort, also known as Dindigul Malai Kottai, is a historic fortification situated atop a massive 280-foot-tall hill in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Built in 1605 by the Madurai Nayak king Muthu Krishnappa Nayakar, the fort has witnessed various rulers, including the Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Mysore Wodeyars, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and eventually the British during the Polygar Wars.
The fort is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is open to tourists.
The fort complex includes temples, granaries, and water tanks intricately carved into the rock. The most notable temples are the Lord Shiva Temple and the Kottai Mariamman Temple, which attract spiritual seekers from around the world.
Visitors can climb approximately 350 steps to reach the top of the fort, where they are rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view of the city, green fields, and nearby hills. On a clear day, the distant Kodaikanal Hills can also be seen.
