Diwan-I-Aam, Rakabganj
Diwan-I-Aam, located inside Agra Fort in Rakabganj, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, is a historic hall built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 1630s. Known as the Hall of Public Audience, it was the place where the emperor met with the general public, listened to their grievances, and administered justice.
The structure originally featured red sandstone, but was later plastered with white shell paste, giving it a marble-like appearance. The hall is divided into three sections, with a flat roof and intricately decorated columns. At the center of the eastern wall, there is a marble canopy, which once housed the emperor’s throne.
The emperor was separated from the courtiers by a gold-plated railing, while a silver railing ran around the remaining three sides of the hall. The royal ladies could observe the proceedings from behind lattice marble windows, ensuring they remained unseen.
The hall was restored by Lord Curzon during British rule, and its inlay work was further refined by Florentine artist Mennegatti.
