Droog Fort, also known as Bakasura Malai, is a historic fort ruin located about 15 kilometers from Coonoor in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, perched at an altitude of around 6,000 feet. Built in the 18th century, it served as a military outpost for Tipu Sultan to monitor the surrounding plains and kingdoms.
Today, only one wall of the fort remains standing. The fort offers spectacular panoramic views of the Nilgiri hills and tea plantations, making it a popular spot for trekkers, bird watchers, and nature lovers. Visitors reach the fort by trekking through the Nonsuch Tea Estate, enjoying scenic beauty as well as the nearby cascades like Law’s Falls. The fort also carries local folklore linking it to a demon named Bakasura, giving it its alternate name.
Despite its ruined state, Droog Fort remains an important historical and natural attraction in the Nilgiris.
