Built by the Rajas of Bishnupur, the temple is constructed of laterite with subsequent additions of sandstone and brick. The temple is a solid structure, not typically seen in Bengal, and its top appears incomplete, possibly due to damage over time.
According to local legends, Lord Shiva himself meditated to resolve a boundary dispute between the Mallabhum and Samantabhum kingdoms, and the temple was built as a symbol of unity.
