Ekteswar Shiv Mandir
The Ekteswar Shiv Mandir, also known as Ekteswar Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Ekteswar, near Bankura, West Bengal. The temple is particularly associated with the deity's form known as Ekapada Murthy, a unique manifestation of Shiva depicted with a single leg.
Built by the Rajas of Bishnupur, the temple is constructed of laterite with subsequent additions of sandstone and brick. It stands on the bank of the Dwarakeswar River, about 10 kilometers from Bankura town. The temple is a solid structure, not typically seen in Bengal, and its top appears incomplete, possibly due to damage over time.
According to local legends, Lord Shiva himself meditated to resolve a boundary dispute between the Mallabhum and Samantabhum kingdoms, and the temple was built as a symbol of unity. The temple is also known for the celebration of Charak Puja, a festival held in the Bengali month of Choitro with great enthusiasm.
