Fort Khejarla
Fort Khejarla, located about 85 kilometers from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, is a 400-year-old heritage fort built in 1611 AD by Maharaja Gopal Das Ji, who was granted the fort and surrounding lands (jagir) as a reward for his valor in fighting the Mughals.
The fort is constructed atop granite boulders using red sandstone, reflecting classic Rajput-Mughal architectural styles with intricate carvings, ornate balconies, jharokhas (overhanging windows), and majestic archways. Despite being attacked and destroyed three times by the Mughals, it was rebuilt each time, symbolizing Rajput bravery and resilience. The fort derives its name from the Khejdi tree indigenous to the area, which is believed to have saved it during cannon attacks.
Once a flourishing estate with a significant number of servants, horses, and camels, Khejarla was one of the important jagirs in Marwar, governed by the Bhati clan of Rajputs descended from the royal family of Jaisalmer. Part of the fort still serves as the royal family's residence, while another section has been converted into a heritage hotel that combines the grandeur of royal life with modern luxury.
The fort offers visitors a chance to experience the rich culture, history, and architecture of Rajasthan, including traditional hospitality provided by descendants of noble families who served the rulers for generations.
