Fort Vijf Sinnen
Fort Vijf Sinnen was a fortification built by the Dutch East India Company in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, during their colonial rule in the Coromandel region between 1610 and 1798. Its name means "the five senses" in Dutch. Construction started in the late 17th century after the Dutch shifted their Coromandel capital from Pulicat to Nagapattinam in 1690.
The fort was heavily fortified to protect Dutch trading interests but was captured by the British in 1781 during the Siege of Negapatam in the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. Following the Treaty of Paris in 1784, the fort remained under British control and was not returned to the Dutch. Today, Fort Vijf Sinnen has been demolished, with only historical records and archaeological remnants remaining as testimony to its colonial past.
