Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary
Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, located in Kendrapara district of Odisha, is the only marine sanctuary in the state and covers 1,435sqkm along the coast from the Dhamra River to the Brahmani River.
Globally renowned as the most important nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles, the sanctuary attracts hundreds of thousands of these turtles each year between October and May for breeding and mass nesting events known as arribada. The area also boasts diverse flora and fauna, with restrictions on fishing and industrial activity to protect its ecological balance.
Part of the sanctuary is situated near the Bhitarkanika National Park, and visitors can experience the spectacular sight of turtles emerging from the sea to lay eggs, making it a key destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
