The Ganges Barrage, officially known as the Lav Khush Barrage, is a significant infrastructure project located at Azad Nagar-Nawabganj near Kanpur's Marine Drive Atal Ghat in Uttar Pradesh. The construction of the barrage began in 1995 and it was inaugurated in May 2000. The total length of the barrage is 621 meters (2,037 feet).
The Ganges Barrage serves multiple purposes. It acts as a four-lane highway bypass for NH 91, provides irrigation to over 2.5 lakh hectares of land, generates hydroelectric power up to 60 MW, and offers a scenic spot for picnics, boat rides, and bird watching. The area around the barrage is also being developed into a satellite township known as Trans Ganga City, which will include residential, commercial, and institutional areas.
