Garh Kundar is an ancient hill fort located in Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh, built by Yashovarma Chandel in the 10th century AD after conquering southwestern Bundelkhand. The fort has a dramatic history marked by battles and changing rulers, including its capture by the legendary Prithviraj Chauhan who appointed Khet Singh Khangar as its ruler, founding the Khangar dynasty.
The fort stands on a hill with five levels, two underground and three above, designed as a defensive structure with architectural features that create optical illusions to confuse enemies. It later came under Bundela control after being seized by Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1347, who gave it to the Bundelas, remaining their capital until they moved to Orchha.
The fort is known for its historical legends, including stories of tragic love and bravery, and features numerous ancient structures, temples, and a stepwell surrounded by arches. It remains an important cultural landmark with rich architectural and historical significance, encapsulating centuries of Bundelkhand’s history.
