Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary
Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Gaya district of Bihar and parts of Koderma district in Jharkhand, was established in 1976 and covers an area of about 259 square kilometers. Originally a private hunting reserve, it is now a protected area supporting dry and moist sal forests along with thorn and tropical dry riverine forests.
The sanctuary houses diverse wildlife including tigers, leopards, wolves, sloth bears, chitals, chinkaras, and a variety of birds and reptiles. It lies in a unique biogeographical intersection of the Lower Gangetic Plains and Chota Nagpur Plateau, making it rich in biodiversity. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and human activities, the sanctuary remains vital for wildlife conservation and includes a rest house for visitors, located about 65 kilometers southeast of Gaya town.
