Goa fort
Goa Fort in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is a sea fort situated near Harne village about 15 kilometers from Dapoli. It was built primarily as one of three forts—Goa Fort, Kanakdurg, and Fattegad—designed to guard Suvarnadurg Fort, an important maritime fortification in the region.
Although detailed historical records are scarce, it is known that in 1862 the fort housed 19 cannons and a garrison of around 200 soldiers. The fort is constructed from laterite stone and now lies in ruins but remains accessible to the public as a notable historical and tourist site along the Konkan coast.
Goa Fort's strategic coastal location reflects the defensive and naval priorities of the Maratha era, under whose confederacy control it once fell, before later passing to British rule. Not to be confused with forts named similarly in Goa state, this fort in Ratnagiri is part of the region's rich network of historic forts associated with maritime defense and regional power struggles.
It attracts visitors interested in history, architecture, and coastal landscapes. Nearby forts in Ratnagiri, such as Ratnadurg Fort and Purnagad Fort, also highlight the area's martial heritage and scenic views of the Arabian Sea.
