Government Museum, Dampier Nagar

The Government Museum in Dampier Nagar, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, is a renowned archaeological museum that showcases the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. Established in 1874 by Sir F. S. Growse, the then collector of Mathura, the museum was initially known as the Curzon Museum of Archaeology. 

Over the years, it has undergone several name changes, finally becoming the Government Museum, Mathura. The museum is housed in an artistic red sandstone building, which adds to its charm and historical significance.

The museum is particularly famous for its extensive collection of sculptures, coins, terracotta artifacts, and paintings that reflect the influence of the Mathura School of Art. 

This art style flourished during the Maurya, Sunga, Gupta, and Kushan periods, and the museum's exhibits provide a fascinating glimpse into these eras. Among its treasures are stone sculptures, clay figures, metal artifacts, and coins, which are of great historical and artistic value. 

The museum also features rare items such as a 3000-year-old copper figure, a Jain tablet from the 1st century, and statues of Kushan rulers like Kanishka.
