Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand in the Garhwal Himalayas, covers an area of about 958 square kilometers with altitudes ranging from 1,300 to 6,323 meters. Established in 1955 and later upgraded to a national park, it is named after freedom fighter Govind Ballabh Pant.
The sanctuary is known for its high biodiversity, including endangered species like the snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, brown bear, musk deer, bharal, and Himalayan tahr. It is also home to over 150 bird species such as the golden eagle, black eagle, bearded vulture, and Himalayan monal pheasant.
The park features a variety of forests from broadleaf to alpine shrubs and is a popular destination for trekking and wildlife tourism. It plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, especially through the Snow Leopard Project, aiming to protect these elusive predators in their natural habitat.
