Great Dhaudanr Fort

Great Dhaudanr Fort, also known as Rohtasgarh Fort, is a massive historic fortress located in Rohtas district, Bihar, perched on a plateau approximately 1500 feet above sea level near the Son River. Built originally by Raja Harishchandra and later reinforced by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century, the fort holds immense strategic and historical importance as a seat of power and a defensive stronghold through various dynasties.

Sher Shah Suri captured the fort through a clever ruse and used it to safeguard his family and treasures while commanding military operations. The fort features extensive limestone steps, multiple fortified gates, and remains well-preserved with structures like the Jami Masjid built by Sher Shah's general and palaces established by Mughal governors such as Raja Man Singh.

It served as a military base, detention center, and administrative headquarters over centuries and is surrounded by natural defenses including thick forests and wild animals. The fort's rugged terrain and stone architecture make it a symbol of regional power and valor with a legacy that continues to attract visitors and historians.
