Gudekote Wildlife Sanctuary

Gudekote Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Gudekote Sloth Bear Sanctuary, is located in the Ballari district of Karnataka, India. It covers an area of about 167.59 square kilometers and is the second sanctuary in India and Asia dedicated exclusively to the conservation of the Indian sloth bear.

The sanctuary is situated in the Kudligi and Sandur taluks and features dry deciduous and thorn scrub forests with fruit-bearing trees like custard apple and jamun that support wildlife. In addition to sloth bears, the sanctuary is home to Indian leopards, pangolins, jackals, jungle cats, various civet species, wild boars, striped hyenas, and more than 130 species of birds, including hawk eagles and flycatchers.

Reptiles like vipers, cobras, and red sand boas also inhabit the area. The sanctuary contains prehistoric sites such as rock paintings, natural caves, and old temples, adding historical significance. Protection measures have helped reduce human-wildlife conflicts, and the sanctuary supports biodiversity conservation while offering opportunities for eco-tourism and wildlife education. It is a key natural reserve in the region supporting a rich and diverse ecosystem.
