Himayat Sagar
Himayat Sagar is an artificial lake and reservoir located about 20 kilometers from Hyderabad in the Ranga Reddy district of Telangana. It was constructed in 1927 during the reign of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, and named after his youngest son, Himayat Ali Khan.
The lake was built on the Esi River, a tributary of the Musi River, primarily to provide Hyderabad with a reliable source of drinking water and to protect the city from devastating floods like the one in 1908. For many years, Himayat Sagar, along with the nearby Osman Sagar reservoir, served as a crucial water supply for Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The reservoir covers significant storage capacity and also offers scenic beauty, making it a popular spot for picnics, recreation, and nature walks. However, with the city's population growth, the lake alone is no longer sufficient to meet the water demands. Despite this, it remains an important heritage and ecological landmark, continuing to symbolize a blend of historic urban planning and natural tranquility near Hyderabad.
