Illikkal Kallu

Illikkal Kallu is a striking monolith located on top of Illickal Mala in the Kottayam district of Kerala, around 3,400 to 4,000 feet above sea level. It is part of three hills, each uniquely shaped, including one that looks like a mushroom called Kuda Kallu and another called Koonu Kallu due to its hunchback-like shape. Only half of the main rock, Illikkal Kallu, remains standing as the other half has fallen off.

The area is known for its scenic beauty with numerous mountain streams originating here that form the Meenachil River. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views including the distant Arabian Sea visible as a thin blue line. The sunset on full moon days is notable, with the moon rising like a second sun as the orange sun sets.

The location is a popular trekking destination near villages like Moonnilavu and Thalanadu, with the nearest town being Teekoy. Access involves a hike or a jeep ride with entry fees and some trekking involved, and the landscape is often compared to the famous Pillar Rocks of Kodaikanal. The site is also linked to local myths about a rare medicinal herb called Neela Koduveli believed to bring prosperity.
