Jag Mandir is a historic island palace situated on Lake Pichola in Udaipur, Rajasthan, built between the 16th and 17th centuries by the Sisodia Rajput rulers of Mewar. Construction began in 1551 under Maharana Amar Singh and was completed by Maharana Jagat Singh I, after whom the palace is named.
The palace served as a summer retreat for the royal family and was used to host lavish parties. Architecturally, it is a beautiful blend of Rajput and Mughal styles, prominently featuring yellow sandstone and marble. Notable structures within the palace include the Gul Mahal, built as a refuge for Mughal Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan), the Garden Courtyard, and the Bara Patharon ka Mahal (palace of the twelve stones). The palace is adorned with intricately carved marble, murals, and domes, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
Jag Mandir also holds historical significance as a place of refuge during the 1857 revolt, when it sheltered European families. Today, it remains a popular tourist attraction, accessible by boat, reflecting the grandeur and rich heritage of Udaipur’s royal past.
