According to legend, Lord Krishna was captivated by the beauty of Sem Mukhem and requested land from the local king, Gang Ramola. When the king refused, Krishna used his divine powers to turn the king’s cattle into stone, revealing his true form.
Overwhelmed, the king then offered land to Krishna, who chose to reside there as Sheshnag. The temple is perched at an altitude of 2,903 meters, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. It is considered the largest temple dedicated to Nag Devta in Hinduism. The site features intricate Kumaoni architectural designs, with carvings and sculptures that reflect its 9th-century origins.
