The Jaipur Zoo, also known as the Jaipur Zoological Garden, is one of the oldest and largest zoos in India. Located in the Ram Niwas Garden near the Albert Hall Museum, the zoo was established in 1877 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Spread over an area of 35 acres, the zoo is home to around 550 animals and birds of more than 50 different species.
The zoo is divided into two main sections: one for mammals and the other for birds and reptiles. Some of the notable animals in the zoo include black panthers, leopards, foxes, jackals, hyenas, wolves, Indian civets, monkeys, baboons, black bears, and Himalayan bears. The bird section features a variety of species such as peacocks, lovebirds, pelicans, emus, owls, ducks, parrots, pink flamingos, vultures, cranes, pheasants, cockatoos, painted storks, and budgerigars.
One of the highlights of the Jaipur Zoo is the Gharial Breeding Farm, which is the fourth largest breeding farm of its kind in India. The zoo also has a museum that exhibits the wildlife of Rajasthan and runs various conservation breeding programs for species like gharials, cheetal, and crocodiles.
