Jaraganahalli Lake
Jaraganahalli Lake, also called Yelachenahalli Lake, was a historic lake located in the southern part of Bengaluru on Kanakapura Road near the JP Nagar metro station. The lake spanned about 6 acres originally, as shown in survey maps dating back to 1904, indicating it existed for over a century.
In 1998, part of the lake area was converted into a playground for Jaraganahalli government school students, reducing the water body. Over the years, the remaining lake area faced significant encroachment and degradation, eventually being converted into garbage dumping grounds and slum settlements.
Despite being listed in city master plans and recognized for its historical and ecological importance, the lake has almost completely vanished due to unplanned urban growth and encroachment, losing its role as a vital water body and local ecosystem in Bengaluru.
