According to legend, during the battle between Lord Ram and Ravana in the Ramayana, Lord Lakshman was injured by an arrow from Ravana's son, Indrajit. To save Lakshman, Hanuman was tasked with bringing the Sanjivani herb from the Dronagiri mountain. While carrying the entire mountain, a part of it fell at this location, giving rise to the name Jarandeshwar.
