Jatinga
Jatinga is a small village located in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, about 330 kilometers south of Guwahati. It is situated on a ridge near Haflong and is inhabited mainly by the Khasi-Pnar tribal people along with some Dimasa and Assamese residents.
Jatinga is globally famous for a mysterious phenomenon that occurs between August and November on moonless, foggy nights, where birds of various species become disoriented, attracted to village lights, and crash into obstacles, leading to their death. This event, often called the "bird suicide," happens between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and involves local and migratory birds like kingfishers and bitterns. Scientists believe the birds are confused by weather conditions and light, not that they actually commit suicide.
This unique occurrence draws many ornithologists and tourists, and conservationists have worked to educate locals to reduce bird deaths. The village is also known for its pleasant climate and scenic surroundings, making it a peaceful and quiet destination for visitors interested in nature and bird watching.
