Jorpukhuri
Jorpukhuri, located in Uzanbazar, Guwahati, Assam, is a historic site featuring twin ponds, often referred to as Jor Pukhuri (meaning pair of ponds in Assamese). These ponds were originally constructed by Swargadeo Siva Singha, an Ahom king, to meet the water needs of the nearby Ugratara Temple.
The ponds were also connected to the Brahmaputra River via the Naojan Channel, which was used by Ahom royalty for their visits to the temple.
Over time, the British divided the ponds by constructing a road in the middle, giving them their current form. Today, Jorpukhuri is not only a heritage site but also a sanctuary for various species of birds, turtles, and aquatic life.
Recent rejuvenation efforts have transformed the area into a beautiful spot for visitors, complete with ornamental fencing, ecological cleaning, and improved access.
