Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary is located near Jayakwadi village in Paithan taluka of Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, within the backwaters of the Nath Sagar reservoir formed by the Jayakwadi Dam on the Godavari River.
The sanctuary was officially declared in 1986 and spans over 341 square kilometers, comprising numerous islands surrounded by shallow waters ideal for roosting and nesting. It hosts over 300 species of birds, including many migratory species such as flamingos, spoonbills, painted storks, night herons, and northern shovelers, attracting bird watchers especially from October to February.
The sanctuary supports a rich aquatic ecosystem with more than 50 species of fish, creating a balanced habitat for both resident and migratory birds. However, environmental challenges like fluctuating water levels and drought in upper catchment areas pose threats to the habitat, necessitating ongoing conservation efforts. The nearby Sant Gyaneshwar Udyan garden and boating facilities enhance the sanctuary’s appeal as a popular eco-tourism and picnic spot.
