Jogimatti Wildlife Sanctuary, located about 20-25 kilometers from Chitradurga in Karnataka, covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometers across the Chitradurga, Hiriyur, and Holalkere taluks. Known as the "Ooty of Dryland," the sanctuary features rocky hills, dry deciduous forests, and grasslands, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna.
It is home to several species including endangered leopards, sloth bears, Indian jackals, wolves, porcupines, jungle cats, Indian peafowl, and Malabar giant squirrels. The sanctuary includes Jogimatti Peak, which rises to about 3,985 feet and offers panoramic views, as well as the Himavatkedra Waterfall and a cave housing a Shiva lingam and statues of Basavanna and Veerabhadra.
Originally designated as Jogimatti State Forest, it was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2015 to protect its biodiversity, though it faces threats from illegal mining and windmill projects. The area is appreciated for its scenic landscapes, wildlife, and opportunities for trekking and nature observation.
