Jowai

Jowai is a picturesque town nestled in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, serving as the district headquarters and a cultural hub of the region. Perched at an elevation of around 1,380 meters, it enjoys a cool climate and is surrounded on three sides by the Myntdu River, which flows toward the Indo-Bangladesh border just 50 kilometers away.

The town is predominantly inhabited by the Pnar people, a sub-tribe of the Khasi, and reflects a rich tapestry of traditions, including a matrilineal social structure where property is inherited through the female line.

Jowai is known for its scenic beauty and historical significance, with attractions like Syntu Ksiar—a verdant valley with a monument dedicated to freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah—Thadlaskein Lake, and the Jowai Presbyterian Church, which dates back to the 19th century.

The town also hosts the vibrant Behdeinkhlam festival, a four-day event celebrated in July to drive away evils and ensure a good harvest, featuring elaborate rituals, music, and a symbolic soccer match played with a wooden ball.
