Jubilee Bridge
Jubilee Bridge was a historic railway bridge over the Hooghly River, connecting Naihati and Bandel in West Bengal, India. Opened on February 16, 1887, during the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, it was designed by Sir Bradford Leslie and Alexander Meadows Rendel.
The bridge was notable for its cantilever truss structure, constructed entirely by riveting, without any nuts or bolts. It served as the first permanent crossing over the Hooghly River, which was previously considered unbridgeable due to difficult foundation conditions.
After 129 years of service, the bridge was decommissioned on April 17, 2016, and replaced by Sampreeti Bridge, a modern double-line railway bridge built beside it.
The new bridge was inspired by the Sydney Harbour Bridge and features a continuous steel bow-string superstructure.
