Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Fort in Bikaner, Rajasthan, is a grand historic fortress built primarily between 1589 and 1594 under the rule of Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner. Unlike many other forts in Rajasthan, it is uniquely situated on the plains rather than on a hilltop, encompassing an area of about 5.28 hectares with thick walls, a protective moat (no longer existing), and 37 bastions.

The fort is renowned for its impressive composite architecture that blends Rajput, Mughal, Gujarati, and later British influences. Inside, several beautifully decorated palaces, temples, and pavilions showcase intricate stone carvings, mirror work, and traditional Rajasthani art. It has seven gates, with Karan Pol being the main entrance, and has historically stood strong against numerous invasions, briefly falling only once to Kamran Mirza, a Mughal prince.

Junagarh Fort houses important structures such as Karan Mahal, Anup Mahal, and Chandra Mahal, each reflecting the cultural richness and artistic mastery of different rulers over centuries. The fort remains a significant symbol of Rajput valor, architectural brilliance, and Bikaner’s royal heritage, attracting historians, architecture enthusiasts, and tourists.
