Kaliveli Lake
Kaliveli Lake, also known as Kazhuveli Lagoon, is a large coastal lake and wetland located in Viluppuram district, Tamil Nadu, near the Bay of Bengal and about 16 kilometers north of Pondicherry. It is one of the largest wetlands in peninsular India, recognized nationally and internationally by IUCN for its ecological importance.
The lake is a seasonal wetland with both freshwater and brackish water zones and serves as a crucial feeding and breeding ground for migratory birds on the Central Asian flyway. It hosts a rich diversity of wildlife including kingfishers, flamingos, and other exotic birds. The surrounding area also contains the ruins of the colonial-era Allamparwa Fort.
Despite threats from agriculture, poaching, and commercial activities, Kaliveli Lake remains a vital ecological hotspot and a peaceful natural retreat largely unexplored by tourists.
