Kallanai
Kallanai, also known as the Grand Anicut, is one of the oldest functional irrigation dams in the world. It was built around 100-150 CE by the Chola king Karikala Cholan across the Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu. The dam is located about 14 kilometers from Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and 45 kilometers from Thanjavur.
The primary purpose of Kallanai was to divert the waters of the Kaveri River to the fertile delta region for irrigation via canals. This ancient engineering marvel has stood the test of time and continues to be in use today. The dam stretches over 329 meters and is made of unhewn stone. It has been slightly modified by the British during their rule to enhance its capacity.
