Kanjli Wetland

Kanjli Wetland, located in Kapurthala, Punjab, is a man-made wetland formed by the Kali Bein rivulet and spans over 183 hectares. It is recognized as a Ramsar site and holds great ecological importance due to its rich biodiversity, including over 190 bird species with both resident and migratory birds, 35 species of fish such as Catla catla and Labeo rohita, and various mammals like Indian civet and mongoose.

The wetland supports diverse aquatic, mesophytic, and terrestrial flora including species of Acacia, Albizia, and Syzygium. It plays a crucial role in maintaining local ecological balance, offering habitat for waterfowl and aquatic life while also serving as a natural water purifier and ground water recharge zone.

Despite its ecological significance, Kanjli Wetland faces threats from water pollution, invasive species like water hyacinth, land encroachment, and eutrophication, which impact its health and biodiversity. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and rejuvenate the wetland, emphasizing afforestation and habitat preservation to sustain its rich flora and fauna and maintain its function as an important ecological and socio-religious site.
