Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary

Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary, located about 22 km northwest of Begusarai in Bihar, is Asia's largest freshwater oxbow lake and an important natural wetland spanning roughly 2,620 hectares. Formed by the meandering of the Burhi Gandak river, it is a crucial habitat for biodiversity, hosting over 165 plant species and 394 animal species, including around 221 bird species.

The sanctuary serves as a vital stopover for migratory waterbirds along the Central Asian Flyway, supporting 58 migratory species. It is home to several critically endangered species such as the red-headed, white-rumped, and Indian vultures, as well as sociable lapwing and Baer’s pochard. The lake plays a significant role in flood control for the region by absorbing excess water during monsoons.

The sanctuary also supports local livelihoods through fishing and agriculture on seasonal marshlands. Despite its ecological importance, Kanwar Lake faces threats including water management interventions, habitat degradation, and encroachment. It was declared Bihar's first Ramsar site in November 2020, recognizing its international importance for wetland conservation.
