Kanwarjheel Wildlife Sanctuary

Kanwarjheel Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Kanwar Lake or Kabartal Wetland, is located about 22 kilometers northwest of Begusarai in Bihar. It is Asia’s largest freshwater oxbow lake, formed from the meandering of the Burhi Gandak River.

Spanning approximately 2,620 hectares, this wetland plays a crucial role in flood absorption in the region, especially during the monsoon season when it can flood up to 1.5 meters deep. It is a vital biodiversity hotspot, home to over 390 species of animals and 165 plant species, including around 221 bird species, with many migratory birds using it as a key stopover along the Central Asian Flyway.

Several critically endangered species such as different vultures and waterbirds are found here. The sanctuary also supports rich fish biodiversity. Despite facing threats from water management activities and human encroachment, it remains an important ecological and tourism site known for birdwatching and eco-tourism in Bihar. The best time to visit is from September to April, offering visitors a chance to observe diverse wildlife in a scenic natural setting.
