Built between 1351 and 1354 CE by Khan-i-Jahan Junan Shah, the Prime Minister of Feroz Shah Tughlaq, it is a remarkable example of Tughluq-era Indo-Islamic architecture.

The mosque is unique for its square layout and latticed windows (khirkis), which allow light and ventilation while maintaining privacy. It features four open courtyards, 81 domes, and arched gateways, showcasing a blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The mosque is raised on a 3-meter-high plinth and is surrounded by narrow streets, adding to its mystique.
